Square Enix and Sony Pictures Television have announced plans to team up for a live-action series based on Final Fantasy XIV. You read that right.
The series will tell an original story set in the world I’ve occasionally bounced around in since late 2010, Eorzea. From the press release:
Inspired directly by the world and characters of the title’s fourteenth installment, the project will embrace the bold and genre-bending sensibilities of the revered and long-running FINAL FANTASY series as it explores the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict. Filled with iconic hallmarks of the title’s revered mythology – magitek and beastmen, airships and chocobos – the forthcoming series will feature a mixture of new and familiar faces. Those will, notably, include the live-action debut of Cid – one of the games’ central and most beloved characters who has appeared in almost every installment of the franchise to date.
Also involved is the production company Hivemind, best known for their work on Amazon’s The Expanse (and also Netflix’s yet-to-be-released The Witcher).
To be honest, I’m not sure how a series adaptation of FFXIV would play out. While it’s known most for its story, translating that to a live-action TV show seems like a tall order. I’d at least want to see some AFK dancers in the background. Not to mention random groups of adventurers waiting around for their queues to pop.
It just wouldn’t be Eorzea otherwise.
