During a recent Funcom investor’s meeting, it was revealed that The Secret World is heading for a relaunch, beginning as soon as the end of March. All we have to go by right now are investor slides (available right here in a fancy PDF), but the contents within are at the very least intriguing.
From the looks of things, they’re intending to revamp the “new player experience” (that’s a bit of a touchy phrase, but we’ll let it go for now) and improve the combat gameplay. It also seems they’re looking toward a free-to-play business model.
Naturally, I have no idea how any of this will turn out, but after the relaunch, it might be just the right time to jump in and give The Secret World another try.
Despite a less-than-stellar combat system, I’ve always found it to be a somewhat unique MMORPG. Not great — not even necessarily good — but interesting. For one, it takes place in the real world, and operates under the fantastical assumption that every conspiracy theory, every folktale and urban legend, is true.
Just slightly more intriguing than, say, Night Elves.
I remember when it first launched. During the lead-up, they let players take “tests” to see which of the three secret societies most fit them: the Illuminati, the Templars, or the Dragon. I got the Illuminati. Didn’t stick with the game for very long, but at least it was different.
