Universal has released the second trailer for their upcoming The Mummy remake.
I’m not sure how I feel about it. I think Sofia Boutella actually looks pretty cool as Ahmanet, and I’m very interested to see how Russell Crowe’s character fits in.
That said, I have more than a few reservations about the movie’s overall tone. Seems a bit action heavy. The use of classic songs in movie trailers is getting more than a little cliché, as well.
Who knows? Maybe it’ll surprise me. Then again, this is the second or third time Universal has attempted to launch into a shared monsterverse, so anything could happen.
While 2017’s The Mummy will have nothing to do with 1999’s Brendon Fraiser adventure, I did find it interesting that they’re reusing at least one element – the giant face in the sand. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the lighthearted feel of that series here, replaced instead by what appears to be a more “generic” Tom Cruise action flick. It’s also nearly impossible to compete with that score.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
The Mummy stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, and Russell Crowe, and will release on June 9, 2017.
