[Trailer] Nintendo Announces Metroid Dread, First New 2D Metroid In 19 Years

Some said it would never happen, but after 19 years and tons of rumors, Nintendo has finally announced Metroid Dread. And it’s coming later this year.

“Suit up as Samus Aran in the first new entry of the 2D Metroid saga in more than 19 years, Metroid Dread, launching 10/8. “

Dread will take place after Fusion chronologically, and according to Yoshio Sakamoto, the game’s title has everything to do with what players and Samus will face within: “It represents a relentless threat that pursues the seemingly invincible Samus Aran,” he says.

It’s also interesting to note that Dread has been rumored since the old Nintendo DS days. Sakamoto says the game’s original idea has been around for 15 years, but has faced numerous starts and stops in that time. You can find out more in Nintendo’s Metroid Dread Development History video.

Metroid Dread will release October 8, 2021 on Nintendo Switch, alongside a new set of Metroid amiibos:
