A Closer Look at Kong’s Battle Axe from Godzilla Vs. Kong

There’s a lot going on in the first trailer for Legendary’s Godzilla Vs. Kong, but the one thing that really made me think “What?” is King Kong’s battle axe.

That’s right — Kong isn’t showing up to a battle with a giant radioactive dinosaur unprepared. He’s carrying an axe presumably made using one of Godzilla’s own severed dorsal fins.

It’s like Batman showing up with a piece of kryptonite. Is this Godzilla’s one weakness? I mean, the thing can absorb atomic breath! That’s Godzilla’s #1 super move!

For a closer look at the battle axe (or is it more of a tomahawk?), we can turn to Kaiju News Outlet, who recently shared images of the S.H. MonsterArts Kong action figure. The figure will release in June for $68.

The axe looks to be a made of bone (perhaps that of a skull crawler?), with one of Godzilla’s fins/scales tied to it.

Very nice.

The big question is just how Kong came to acquire a piece of Godzilla in the first place. Perhaps we’ll get to see that happen, in which case I expect Godzilla to become extremely angry. I don’t imagine having a piece of yourself ripped off and used against you is a particularly good feeling.

Or maybe Kong just had one laying around for a rainy day. Does Godzilla shed? Like a lizard or a turtle?

Another point of interest, as mentioned above, is that the axe can deflect or absorb Godzilla’s atomic breath. We see Kong catching Godzilla’s breath like Mace Windu catches Palpatine’s Force lightning with a lightsaber. But what if Godzilla is physically hit with the axe? Is it actually strong enough to damage the indestructible?

We’ve seen Godzilla’s breath nullified in the past (Mechagodzilla was able to absord it in 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla). But with an axe? We haven’t seen that, before.

Godzilla Vs. Kong will release in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31, 2020 (yes, it’s been pushed back a week).
