The trailer for 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters debuted today, and I’ll tell you what: I wasn’t expecting it to be this awesome.
Mothra’s illuminated wings, opening from behind a waterfall. Godzilla shooting an atomic beam into the sky. Rodan with some killer lava wings.
And King Ghidorah, a supposed “savior,” trapped frozen in ice.
This is a much more stylized and colorful look at the kaiju, perhaps in contrast to 2014’s Godzilla (although I will say the palette still seems a bit, and I apologize for using this term, grimdark). Meanwhile, the rendition of Clair de Lune by Imagine Music is an unexpected surprise, but a welcome one.
All in all, I’d say things are looking pretty good.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set to release May 31, 2019, and stars Vera Farmiga, Sally Hawkins, Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Ken “Let them fight!” Watanabe. The film is directed by Michael Dougherty, of Trick r Treat and Krampus fame.
