Hot off the presses over at Deadline is news that Tim Burton will produce and direct a new reimagining of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman for Warner Bros., with Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects) working on the screenplay.
Not much else is currently known about the project, but at the very least, I’m assuming we can expect a woman of around 50 feet tall stomping through a city, or at least a small town. It’s a decent bet, anyway.
The original Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, released in 1958, followed 1957’s The Amazing Colossal Man and The Incredible Shrinking Man, though was a much campier and fun take on the idea of size-changing humans than its predecessors.
Directed by Nathan Hertz, the film stars Alison Hayes as Nancy Archer, a down-on-her-luck heiress who comes into contact with an otherworldly alien sphere (and its gigantic alien keeper) and later grows into a giantess.
The 1993 remake starring Daryl Hannah mostly kept the camp, but focused more on the themes of female empowerment.
Personally, I prefer the original, because Alison Hayes just seemed to have a ton of fun in the role of Nancy Archer. It also starred Yvette Vickers as Honey Parker, known around these parts for her role in Attack of the Giant Leeches. It’s just a fun time. Give it a watch if you haven’t!
“Attack of the 50 Foot Woman! Incredibly huge! With incredible desires for love…and vengeance!”
Meanwhile, a few other movies on the topic to keep your eyes on: Disney’s (potentially) upcoming sequel to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids starring Josh Gad, simply titled Shrunk, and the long-rumored-but-never-quite-making-it remake of The Incredible Shrinking Man.
Last we heard, that film will begin shooting in May and star The Artist‘s Jean Dujardin. It’s the Atomic Age all over again, hopefully not too literally!
No word yet on the status of my own recently submitted screenplay ‘Attack of the 50 Foot Woman,’ about a woman with 50 feet who goes on a rampage in a wholesale footware store in Orlando. Fingers crossed!
