Two New Kaiju Comics Approach! Hellboy and the Justice League Get Monstrous

Godzilla and King Kong meet Superman, Batman, and Supergirl

Kaiju comic fans have a couple things to look forward to this Fall, with the arrival of two, count them, two giant monster-focused comic series.

First up is Giant Robot Hellboy, featuring a, well, giant robotic Hellboy. Series creator Mike Mignola is teaming up with long-time Hellboy partner Duncan Fegredo for the 3-issue series, which will see Hellboy forceably hooked up to a mech! Uh oh!

Hellboy is kidnapped and hooked up to a massive mecha-Hellboy for a mission on a mysterious, faraway island, but the island might just put up a fight of its own.

Sounds a little like Skull Island, but probably not! As Mike Mignola comments in the official press release, “Giant Robot Hellboy is my very obvious nod to all those Japanese giant monster movies—which I actually have no particular love for.” Gasp. That said, Mignola does admit that he enjoys listening to discussions about those movies, so I guess that’s something!

Mignola and Fegredo previously worked together on Hellboy: Darkness Calls, Hellboy: The Wild Hunt, and Hellboy: The Storm and The Fury.

But that’s not all!

The biggest announcement out of this week’s San Diego Comic Con was easily Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. King Kong, a monstrous 7-issue series featuring writing by Brian Buccellato, art by Christian Duce, and coloring by Luis Guerrero.

The series is a partnership between DC, Legendary Comics and Toho International, bringing an incredible number of iconic characters together for the first time.

“What starts as a routine clash between the Justice League and the Legion of Doom takes a dangerous turn when the wall between worlds is breached…with Godzilla, Kong, and the Monsterverse emerging on DC’s Earth! What ensues will be a brawl of unprecedented scale and destruction!”

Those darn parallel universes! Always bleeding into each other!

As DC President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee said in the official announcement, “As a comics fan—there’s nothing more fun and exciting than exploring those amazing ‘What If’ situations that come up when fandoms cross streams! In this case, it’s a matchup of the world’s greatest Super Heroes in the Justice League who take on not only the King of the Monsters—Godzilla—but the mighty Kong himself! It’s a crossover no-holds-barred battle, decades in the making, and no bona fide comics fan will want to miss it!”

We were also given a sneak peak inside, as well as a look at the covers. For some extra fun, special gatefold variant covers will feature “Roar Sound FX” – sound chips that’ll roar at you whenever you open the comics!

Both Giant Robot Hellboy and Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. King Kong will release in October 2023. The first issue of Hellboy will be available on October 25, while you’ll get to see Kong party with Supergirl and the Green Lantern a little earlier on October 17.
