Welcome to Weekend Wrap-Up, where I share some of the stuff I didn’t get to last week!
Did you hear the news? Shark Week starts today! That’s one full week of quality Discovery programming, like Jaws vs. The Meg, Raiders of the Lost Shark and, of course, The Haunting Of Shark Tower. You can check out their schedule over at the Discovery website – shows begin around 8PM every night until next Sunday, or you can catch them on Discovery Plus.
Not enough for you? Shudder is also getting in on the aquatic action, with a brand new documentary called Sharksploitation, available on their streaming service as of a couple days ago. Let’s check out the trailer!
Everybody loves sharks! Just don’t get too close.
In other shark-related news, The Meg wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, but it also wasn’t this worst. This Chinese poster for The Meg 2: The Trench, though, is pretty incredible! The Meg 2 stars Jason Statham and Wu Jing, and will release in theaters August 4, 2023.
What’s Old Is New!
The Giant Gila Monster and The Killer Shrews are both getting restored editions on September 26, as a 2-disc double feature Blu-ray and DVD. Gila in particular has been restored using a 4k scan of the original 35mm film, while Shrews is getting the HD treatment. Also included will be a number of bonus features, including new commentaries and archival interviews, as well as old radio ads.
Games With Monsters
Madshot is now available on Nintendo Switch and Steam. Fight your way through hordes of Lovecraftian creatures as you “invade that abominable eldritch mountain of slushy nastiness known as Cthulhu.” The game is a roguelite that features tons of acrobatics, upgrades, and boss battles.
Fresh out of Japan, SAEKO: Giantess Dating Sim is, well, a dating sim with a twist. “When you woke up, a giant girl was looking down at you. SAEKO: Giantess Dating Sim is a novel game that depicts the life of Saeko, a girl with mysterious abilities.” A demo will release August 2023.
Terror Of Hemasaurus is currently available as part of the At-Home Arcade bundle over at Humble Bundle. You still have 12 days! The game is a throwback to the old Midway Rampage arcade games, featuring four playable giant beasts and a whole lot of retro destruction. (Also the giant robot monster looks a little bit like a shark.) The bundle also includes Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Edition and River City Girls.
That’s about it for this week. Tune in next time when we look at other stuff from the previous week! Which is this coming week, but it’s not over yet. That’s just how time works!
