Director Adam Wingard returns alongside screenwriter Terry Rossio for the follow-up to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, and things are looking as Showa as ever!
I won’t lie – when that giant gloved hand shot up out of the ground, I thought I was watching a Transformers trailer for a second! But I wasn’t! It’s the latest trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and it looks like both Kong and Godzilla are getting some upgrades.
Some have noticed that Godzilla has slimmed down quite a bit since his first 2014 appearance in the Monsterverse.
There’s speculation that this might be because he’d been in hibernation for so long, and now he’s staying active and really keeping up on his fitness.
I’m not sure how that meshes with chilling out in an iceberg (again), but it’s a fair enough theory! However, some also think Godzilla may be evolving. Chances are we’ll just have to wait and see if The New Empire delves into Godzilla’s changes for ourselves!
Kong still has his tomahawk!
There’s even a bit of controversy over Godzilla’s slight change-up. The truth is, Godzilla is always changing. He’s different from before, and he’ll be different from now some day in the future! That’s just how it works!
Ominous! The “New Threat” shown in the trailer is the ruthless Skar King. We still haven’t seen much of him, but he looks pretty agitated!
The U.S. Monsterverse films have become increasingly more Showa as they’ve gone on. Godzilla vs. Kong was a fun romp into the Hollow Earth, and The New Empire looks to be taking us back in that direction.
I know some who aren’t exactly pleased that the Western Godzilla movies are becoming “goofier” in comparison to the 2014 film, or even King of the Monsters. But personally, I’m all for it! Don’t forget, Godzilla Minus One also just released with smashing success, and with a much more grounded take, similar to the original Gojira. It’s a pretty good time to be a Godzilla fan.
I am really liking these ancient ruins!
Godzilla x Kong is set to release in theaters on April 12, 2024, and stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen.
