Today was Godzilla Day, celebrating 67 years since the original Japanese release of Gojira on November 3, 1954.
While there were a number of streams and announcements (Toho Kingdom has you covered with the full list), the highlight was undoubtedly this retro Godzilla Vs. Hedorah battle, directed by none other than Kazuhiro Nakagawa (assistant director of 2016’s Shin Godzilla).
I don’t know about you, but I found this insanely fun and surprisingly well shot. The short actually uses the suits from 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars, along with a ton of miniature buildings:
“…in addition to the buildings and cranes used in the Godzilla series, more than 50 miniature buildings, including chimneys and gas tanks, were created for this shooting, recreating Godzilla, Hedora, and the industrial area that was the stage of their great battle 17 years ago.”
Hedora first appeared in 1971’s Godzilla vs. Hedorah, making this the giant living sludge’s 50th anniversary.
